ORENA SAVE FOCUS MICCAI Challenge Rules

By registering and participating in the ORENA SAVE FOCUS MICCAI Challenge, participants confirm that they have read, understood, and agree to comply with all rules and guidelines outlined herein, in addition to the Terms of Service ORENA SAVE FOCUS MICCAI Challenge.

1. All legal terms used throughout this document shall have the same meaning and definition as set forth in the Terms of Service, which are incorporated herein by reference.

2. Each Participant is required to sign up with one verified account. Anonymous participation is not allowed, only verified accounts are accepted to participate. Participants must accurately display their true names and affiliations (university, institute, or company), and country of residence. All participants must form a team, even if the team consists of a single member. Each participant can only be a member of a single team. Members from the same institution or group should form a single team. Teams are not allowed to split. Submission limits are defined at the level of a team.

3. Individuals directly involved in organizing the Challenge, companies sponsoring the Challenge, and individuals providing data for evaluation are not eligible to receive prizes. Teams that include such individuals may still participate and be ranked, but their involvement must be clearly disclosed in the model description required for submission to the test phase and visibly indicated on the public leaderboard.

4. By registering, each team agrees to use the videos provided to participate in the Challenge only in the scope of the Challenge and for participating in the Challenge and neither pass it on to a third party, share it beyond members of the team nor use it for any publication or for commercial uses. After the Challenge and the Challenge paper submission, the baseline models will be made publicly available for non-commercial use.

5. All videos used in the Challenge have been deidentified using automated and manual deidentification techniques, and as they only display intraabdominal views, do not include information identifying natural persons. By registering for the Challenge you agree to refrain from any attempt to reidentify information that has been anonymized, such as individual surgeons or facilities, or the provenance of the video.

6. You agree, that the Challenge Description as posted on the Platform is binding to your participation and that all results you submit have to follow the rules set out in these Challenge Rules, the Terms of Service and the Challenge Description.

7. You will be provided with a Python package by DKFZ with the start of the Challenge to help you with your contribution. The package includes Third Party Components (Open-Source), which are licensed under their own Open-Source licenses. You are entitled to use these Third Party Components in accordance with the respective license terms. In the event of any conflict between the terms of use for Third Party Components included in this Agreement and the license terms specified in the Open-Source License Agreement, the latter shall take precedence. The Python package includes Third Party Components licensed under a license that requires us to provide the source code of this software, such as the GPL or LGPL. You can obtain the complete corresponding source code for Third Party Components from us without time limit and at no cost. Please contact us using the contact details provided below.

8. To participate in the challenge, your resulting algorithms ("algorithms") have to be uploaded as described in the Challenge Description before the deadline, including a docker container and a summary of the method used to generate the results.

9. The algorithms of the participating teams will be evaluated by the DKFZ and presented during the ORENA SAVE FOCUS MICCAI Challenge.

10. To be considered for an award, your team has to be present at the Challenge with at least one team member and present your method.

11. By submitting the algorithms to the Challenge, Participants understand and agree to use their algorithms for method comparison. This will be used to prepare a joint publication which writing process will be led DKFZ. First and last authorship position will correspond to the Challenge organizer(s) and each participating team may have contributing co-authors in the author list according to the Participation Policy (Article 16).

12. By submitting algorithms participants furthermore understand, that DKFZ has a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, sublicensable license to use, reproduce, modify, and display inferred results for the purposes of providing and improving the Platform and Services and to execute the Challenge and the related research project, limited for the time of the Challenge.

13. Your results used in the challenge can be used for publication purposes by You only after the first version of the joint publication, summarizing challenge results, is submitted. All Participants will be notified of this on the Platform and via email. Provided data may only be used in such a publication after it has been published according to Article 4 of these Challenge Rules.

14. Data usage agreement

The 30 HEICO videos used in the Challenge have already been publicly released under a CC BY-NC-SA license. The remaining 170 training videos will be available under the following data usage agreement:

By registering for the FOCUS Challenge, each Participant agrees:

  1. to only handle and use the data and videos provided under the terms of these Challenge Rules, in particular, but not limited to its Articles 4, 5, 6 and 7,

  2. to maintain the data within a protected/secure environment compliant with HIPAA, GDPR, or similar regulation, and ensure access to the videos are restricted to members of the challenge team only.

  3. that Algorithms and models generated by individual teams may be used for noncommercial or commercial purposes,

  4. and that all question answer pairs for the training data will be publicly available under a CC BY license, except for the additionally annotated questions and answers on the HEICO data, which will be released under the CC BY-NC-SA license to comply with the license of the original video data.

15. Participation Policy

The Participation Policy as laid out on the Platform and in its current version forms an integral part of these Terms. Participants agree to adhere to this Participation policy and acknowledge that their participation to the challenge is governed by this Participation Policy.

16. The competition is open to Participants worldwide, except if you are a resident of North Korea, Crimea or any other place covered by Financial measures, Restrictions on goods or EU sanctions. The aforementioned regulation is in place because of a requirement to conform to EU regulations concerning the provision of resources and transfer of finances (challenge award money, etc.).

17. In the event of the invalidity of individual clauses, the remaining clauses remain valid. These Terms of Use are governed by German law. The place of jurisdiction for all disputes is Mannheim.
